Denmark has made significant investments in infrastructure and initiatives that support the use of AI in research and innovation. However, AI adoption in academic research remains cautious, and collaboration on AI between higher education institutions, research institutions and companies is still limited.
Denmark’s AI ecosystem has several strengths, including major investments in computing capacity and computer science research. Yet the brief also identifies several untapped opportunities – particularly in the everyday application and integration of AI across research and innovation environments, as well as in the still unrealised collaboration between private companies and public knowledge institutions.
Cumbersome and opaque access to computing resources constitutes a significant barrier for companies and research institutions seeking to use AI. In addition, several major challenges remain: supporting skills development and access to AI infrastructure; ensuring scientifically robust, critical and ethically responsible use of AI; communicating guidance on regulation and data security; and developing energy- and climate-responsible AI.
The Danish Council for Research and Innovation Policy sets out recommendations on the initiatives needed to strengthen Denmark’s AI ecosystem and ensure broader use of AI in research and innovation.
